The "Coca-Cola" route — the only climb with hut accommodation, gentler underfoot but with a lower success rate. · 5–6 days · Moderate · Good
Marangu is the oldest and most established route, nicknamed the "Coca-Cola" route for being the most straightforward. It is the only route with permanent hut accommodation — shared dormitories with bunk beds and mattresses — which appeals to climbers who would rather not camp, and it offers the most shelter in wet weather.
Its gradient is gentle, but there is a catch: it is short, and it uses the same path for both ascent and descent, which gives less scenic variety and — on the standard five-day version — less time to acclimatise. That makes its success rate lower than the longer routes. Adding a sixth day for acclimatisation improves your chances considerably, and we always recommend it.
Day by day
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut · 1,860 m · 2,700 m · ~8 km · 4–5 hrs · Rainforest · A well-maintained trail climbs gently through lush rainforest alive with monkeys and birdsong to the A-frame huts at Mandara. A short detour to the Maundi Crater rewards you with views out toward Kenya and your first sense of the mountain's scale.
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut · 2,700 m · 3,720 m · ~12 km · 5–7 hrs · Moorland · The forest opens into rolling moorland dotted with giant lobelia and groundsel, with grand views of the jagged Mawenzi peak and Kibo ahead. Horombo is a busy, sociable cluster of huts where climbers heading up and down meet and swap stories.
Acclimatisation day at Horombo (Zebra Rocks) · ~5 km · 3–4 hrs · Moorland · A vital extra day on the six-day itinerary. You walk high toward the striped Zebra Rocks or the base of Mawenzi and return to sleep at Horombo — the classic climb-high-sleep-low that markedly improves your summit chances. The rest of the day is for resting and hydrating.
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut · 3,720 m · 4,703 m · ~10 km · 5–7 hrs · Alpine desert · You cross the stark, lunar "saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo — a long, exposed, gently rising desert walk that feels like another planet. Kibo Hut is a spartan stone shelter where you eat early and try to rest before a midnight start.
Summit night: Kibo to Uhuru Peak, down to Horombo · 4,703 m · 5,895 m · ~6 km up · ~10 km down · 12–15 hrs · Arctic summit · The hardest night: switchbacks up scree to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then along the rim to Uhuru Peak at sunrise. After your summit moment you descend all the way back to Horombo — a very long day, rewarded at last by warmth, food and sleep.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate · 3,720 m · 1,860 m · ~20 km · 5–6 hrs · Moorland → forest · A long but downhill final day retracing your steps through moorland and rainforest to the gate, where certificates are presented — gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak, green for Gilman's Point.
Who it suits
Best for climbers who prefer sleeping in huts rather than tents, want the most sheltered option in the rainy season, or are on a tighter budget — provided you take the six-day version with the acclimatisation day to protect your summit chances.
Best time
January to early March, and June to October; its huts make it the most forgiving choice in wetter months.
